Included in Fred Kiser's Columbia River Highway Series is this view of a section of the Sandy River near Troutdale. This section of the historic highway was constructed in 1916, to replace a previous route that crossed the Sandy further downstream at the Sandy Bridge at Troutdale, but required a 10 to 20 percent grade to reach Chanticleer Inn.
A second bridge was built at the south end of this 1 1/2 mile long road called the Sandy River Bridge at Stark Street. Both bridges then acted as feeders for the completed Highway.
