One detail that stands out in this photo is the distance between the wood fired steam tractor and the threshing equipment at the other end of the long (and wide) drive belt. Besides keeping the tractor crew out of the way of the threshing crew, this separation helped to minimize the risk of fire spreading from the boiler to the very dry wheat and straw. While the men are posed, it's likely all are at their work stations. It took two men to monitor and feed the tractor with wood - carried to the scene in the wagon pulled behind the tractor. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
