Astoria photographer Math Mathison created this studio portrait of a Salvation Army couple in full regalia, sometime in the early 1890s. Detail views 1 and 2 show more clearly the Salvation Army name on the woman's and man's hat, as well as on the man's sweater. Because of the large number of transient workers in the fishing and canning trades, Astoria was an early focus for Salvation Army volunteers, who worked extensively with many of the men.
