"Dogs Playing Poker" was a series first published in 1903, and it seems to have inspired photographer Harry Bartels in creating this view.

It can be argued that creating a photograph of anthropomorphized dogs is more challenging than creating a painting. In any event, Bartels has found the right dog, and created what appears to be a typical vignette for the time.
By enlarging the original glass plate, we are able to read the date of 1908 on the Oregon newspaper being read by our canine friend.
