Jennie Michel, a well-known (and often photographed) Clatsop basket weaver, was sometimes referred to as "The Last of her Tribe", though others of the Clatsop lineage outlived her. What is true is that she may have been the last to experience the intact Clatsop culture. Born in about 1815, her father and uncle knew Lewis and Clark. While we don't know for sure, it appears she is sitting in front of her own home in Seaside. In any case, the textures of the weathered wood, broom, and burlap bag create a fitting background for her basket and her own well-weathered face. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
