In the early twentieth century, Harney County was one of several eastern Oregon counties helping to make the state a major producer of wool and sheep. This photo shows an eight-mule team pulling two wagons of large bales on the way to market. Note in detail view 2 the bells on the lead pair, which warned anyone coming the other way about their presence, and provided advance notice when the team approached a settlement or town.
