This portrait of the Cooke - Patton House was taken in about 1935, shortly before it was taken down in 1936 to build the new state library.
The ornate Victorian house was built between 1868 and 1870 by E. N. Cooke when he was the state treasurer. (The state capitol was across the street.) Mr. Cooke & Hiram Smith had been leaders of a wagon train from Ohio to Oregon in 1851.
Ownership passed to Thomas Patton, another member of that wagon train, who married Cooke's daughter Frances.
