This early view about 2000 below the summit of Mt. Hood was taken by William H. Partridge, an Oregon photographer responsible for many boudoir cards - 4 1/2 by 8 inch card-mounted photos that were very popular in the 1880s. While the use of glass plates required a heavy camera and multiple plates to be carried to this high altitude, by 1885 the dry plate process had become generally available, so at least the photographer no longer needed to bring a portable darkroom into the field. Previous to 1880, wet plate negatives needed to be developed before the plates could dry - which happened in ten or fifteen minutes. Thus photos of the upper reaches of mountains only started to appear a few years before this image was created. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
