This particular photo was taken on March 29th, and the light dusting of snow adds contrast and detail to the upper half of the image. Beacon Rock is a well-known landmark along the north side of the Columbia River, which was first written about by Lewis and Clark when they passed by in 1805. They noted the tides in the river at that point, which told them they were getting close to the ocean.
