Deep Snow Cuts at Paradise Inn, Rainier National Park - c. 1920
The original for this image comes from a hand-tinted glass slide, called a magic lantern slide, distributed by the Pacific Stereopticon Company. The Inn was still quite new, having been completed in 1917.
Originally limited to 37 guest rooms, it has been expanded and rebuilt several times, though the appearance of this original part still looks very much the same. Designed along with other early National Park lodges to complement the natural beauty of their surroundings, much of the rock and timbers came from nearby locations. The cedar logs used to support the grand hall were already silver in finish, having survived an 1880s fire which left them weathered but still standing when the inn was built.
