Never one to shy away from publicity, Joaquin Miller of the Steel group arranged to have Fred Kiser take his photo with Applegate as both groups visited the Klamath Agency, where Capt. Applegate was the superintendent. Miller and Applegate already knew each other, and while Miller was famous for his poetry, Applegate was known to compose a few verses himself.
