Photo Engravers' Picnic at Canemah Park - 1913
Banners on the electric locomotive identify this scene for us - a picnic of the Portland Photo Engravers' Union held at Canemah Park south of Oregon City on August 10, 1913. The International Photo Engravers Union was formed in 1904, and by the time of this photo represented over 90% of the 7,000 or so photo engravers in the U.S. It was the first union in the country to secure a shorter work week for its members.
Canemah Park, at the end of the east side electric trolley, was a popular place for group picnics. Passengers could board in Portland, and view the sites down the east side of the Willamette River as they traveled to the festivities. Two men are identified: Roy Meyers is in "plain clothes" (I assume that means the suit) on the engine. Jack LaDieu wears a straw hat near the base drum.
