This view by an unknown photographer shows an intermediate step in the making of shake shingles, as a load of shake bolts is either arriving or leaving the premises, pulled by a fine team with the supervision of the dog in the lower right.

We are located somewhere near Winlock, Washington, located in Lewis County, about 40 miles north of Longview.
Early shake shingles were often about four feet long, and these bolts would be split to form shingles of that size. Note the planks on the ground to give better support during the rainy parts of the year.
