Completed in 1904, the Gold Ray Dam was built for brothers Colonel Frank H. Ray and Dr. C. R. Ray to provide power for their gold mine in Gold Hill. It was located about four miles upstream from Gold Hill on the Rogue River.
The brothers' original plan was to build the power station in Gold Hill, but the town wanted too much money. Eventually, the brothers found generating power to be more profitable than the gold mine, and their resulting Condor Water and Power Company furnished power to Grants Pass, Gold Hill, Medford, Jacksonville, Central Point, and Ashland.
The utility closed in 1972, and in 2010 the dam was removed.
