This dramatic photo shows a fire in progress that destroyed at least a block of buildings along the Portland waterfront. We are looking west towards downtown. The taller building on the right is the U.S. Mills building owned by Albers and Schneider. That firm became Albers Brothers Milling Company in 1901. There were two Madison Bridges. The second burned in 1902, but that fire started on the east side of the river. It would be eight years before that bridge was replaced by the current Hawthorne Bridge in 1910.
