A. G. Walling emigrated with his family to the West Linn area now known as Robinwood in 1849. A printer by trade, he was also a fruit farmer, and helped form the Oregon Agricultural Society, which started the Oregon State Fair.

Moving to Portland in 1855, Walling became a well-known publisher, beginning "The Oregon Farmer", and also producing large reference works, such as the "History of Southern Oregon", published in 1884, still used as a standard resource. This portrait was created by Joseph Buchtel in 1872.
