This image was captured in the late 1870s - a time of growth for the Chinese community in Portland. The city's Chinese population increased from about 700 in 1870 to about 2500 in 1880.

Most of these immigrants were men, and most were from Canton. They worked in railroad construction, mining and canneries, and a growing number were beginning their own small businesses - laundries, farming, restaurants and more.

We know little about this particular young man, beyond the date of the photo. He wears traditional clothes, as was the norm. The photo was taken by Isaac G. Davidson early in his career. The original print has markings for both Shuster & Davidson and for Davidson Brothers. Isaac moved from one partnership to the other in 1877.
