Bertha Townley, of Weiser, Idaho, here proudly shows off her doll and carriage in a formal portrait created in Hazeltine's Baker City, Oregon studio. We now know that this portrait is especially precious, as little Bertha was to die in 1890, at the age of four. Her mother would also die that same year.
Childhood and motherhood were both precarious in the 19th century, and many families lost either children, their mother, or both, to common illnesses or the challenges of childbirth.
