The Dalles-Celilo canal, over eight miles long, begins about three miles upriver from The Dalles. Its construction lasted from 1905 through 1915. It replaced a 13-mile long portage railway owned by the Oregon Steam Navigation Company. Both were created to take freight and passengers around Celilo Falls, which were a barrier to navigation on that part of the Columbia River.
In this photo we are looking upriver at about the middle of the canal.
