The Needles, three miles upstream from Rooster Rock, are known today as the "Pillars of Hercules". They became a must-have view for early photographers beginning in the 1880s.
Early photos like this show the train passing between the two pillars. Today the river side has been filled in, and both the Interstate and the railroad travel to the left of the main spire The two smaller rocks in the water now stand on dry land between the tracks and the highway.
