Rooster Rock's quiet bay and slender profile mark the western end of the Columbia Gorge.
Rooster Rock's slender profile marks the western end of the Columbia Gorge. It foreshadows more wonders to come as one moves further upstream.
Part of its attraction for countless photographers has been the visual interplay between the rock and the quiet bay at its base. In his 1909 book, "The Columbia River", William D. Lyman enthused, "Rooster Rock is distinguished by a singular and exquisite beauty, rather than magnitude or grandeur. It is only three hundred and fifty feet high, but in form and colour and alternation of rock and trees it is the most beautiful object on the River".
