Two workmen from the Umatilla Ordnance Depot pause for a chat and a smoke in front of The First National Bank in downtown Hermiston, perhaps after depositing their paychecks. Built during 1941 for World War II, at the height of construction over 7,000 workers were involved. The location near Hermiston was chosen because of its proximity to rail lines, and because its interior location was far enough inland to make it a difficult target for enemy aircraft.
