This is a photo of William H. Jackson, not a photo he made himself, though he was involved with photography at this age and this may have been taken in his own studio. Born in New York in 1843, Jackson began working as a retoucher in a photographer's studio in Vermont in 1858. With the onset of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Union army in 1862. Mustered out in 1863, he returned to Vermont where he went to work in Style's Photographic Gallery in Burlington.

Similar in appearance to other photos of Jackson from the 1860s, it appears to have been created shortly after his participation in the Civil War. Note the fine detail that was recorded in this small (2 by 3 inch) early tintype.
