Fishing from platforms by Native Americans was coming to an end at the falls at the time this view was created by Crawford in about 1890. In 1893, a state law was passed to prohibit fishing within 600 feet of the fish ladder, which had been blasted out of solid rock in the late 1880s. It was not until 1998 that Oregon came to an agreement with the Yakama Nation to allow tribal members to again engage in ceremonial and subsistence fishing at Willamette Falls. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
