Visiting the Willamette River at Eugene City - c. 1898
The original print of this image was labeled on the back "Eugene City, Or". Eugene City's name was changed to just Eugene in 1889, but many people likely continued to refer to it by its older name.
If you live in or are familiar with the Willamette as it flows through Eugene, I would appreciate it if you can locate this scene more specifically. To me, the river looks pretty wide for Eugene. In any event, it's a great image, apparently of an extended family, visiting the river on a fairly chilly day.
Some of the clothing is wonderful, especially the women's coats, which can be seen in detail view 1. I've been told that the sleeve style is "leg o' mutton", which did not come into style until about 1895. Therefore, I've dated the photo to about 1898. Detail view 2 shows what appears to be a hand-made rowboat.
