The original for this view comes from a hand-tinted portfolio by Cross & Dimmitt titled "The Columbia River Highway, America's Greatest Scenic Drive". At the time Cross & Dimmitt, George Weister, and Fred Kiser were all producing hand-tinted views of the new highway. The term "upper highway" refers to the section between Hood River and The Dalles, completed a few years after the lower section between Troutdale and Hood River.
