Short-cropped hair was actually quite common for girls in the 1890s, as is shown in this portrait by Pendleton photographer Walter Bowman. The two girls are Myrtle and Nancy Finley, who were 8 and 10 years old in 1892. Part of an early Oregon family (here before statehood), they were born and grew up on a farm outside of Helix, in Umatilla County. Helix, in the middle of wheat country, now has a population of 184, and is host each year to the Heart of Country Rodeo.
