Eight members of the Portland YMCA Triangle Club celebrate on the summit of Mt. Hood in 1896, two years after the Mazamas climbing club was formed. (Two other members were behind the camera taking the photo.)
This climb was well-covered by all the newspapers, as the climbers became the third group to successfully illuminate the mountain, using "red fire" powder which they had carried to a point below the summit. The event was seen by thousands of spectators in the Portland area. Will G. Steel, president of the Mazamas, congratulated the young men in an article in the San Francisco Chronicle.
