This portrait of a farm laborer from Oklahoma was taken by Dorothea Lange during her government-sponsored 1939 trip through remote agricultural areas of Oregon. Her notes state that while he could neither read or write, having quit school after the third day, this man was considered by the farmer who employed him to be "the best farm laborer" he ever had. Photographed near Ontario, in Malheur County, he planned to start the following year on his own place in eastern Oregon. -- This photo is restored and printed by Old Oregon.
