This early aerial photo shows Swan Island when it was still an island, and before construction began on Portland's first airport, located here. Airport construction began in 1926, but was not completed until 1930.
In the process of building the airport, the channel to the left was filled in at the far end. Additionally, material dredged from the south channel by the Port of Portland was used as fill, significantly increasing the size of the island to over 900 acres.
