We're looking upstream along the Deschutes River, at about mile 20 (20 miles above the Columbia River).
We're looking upstream along the Deschutes River, at about mile 20 (20 miles above the Columbia). In this view from a hundred years ago, railroad grades can be seen on both sides of the river, remnants of the Deschutes Railroad War.
In fact, if you look close (see detail view 2) you can see a railroad steam engine on the tracks on the east side. These days, the railway still runs on the west side, but the tracks on the east have been abandoned and the grade functions as a pretty bumpy access trail. (Many decaying ties are still there.)
You can drive to Macks Canyon Campground and walk in to this location - about 3 or 4 miles.
