The 3,400 hp diesel electric dredge "Clackamas" shown here was launched in 1925, and at that time was the largest diesel electric dredge in the world. Its 30 inch diameter discharge pipe trailing into the distance was 7,800 feet long.
The Clackamas joined a history of dredging on the Willamette River that began in 1871, two years before the completion of the Willamette Falls Locks. Dredging on the Willamette and Columbia continues to this day in order to maintain enough depth in the shipping channels to support modern vessels.
