At the Hitching Post in Fossil - 1913
Looking north on 2nd Street between Washington and Main, we can see that horse-drawn vehicles still dominated the streets in Fossil in 1913. The brick building in the background is Fossil Mercantile. The company still operates in that building today.
Fossil, incorporated in 1891, became the county seat of Wheeler County in 1899. Among other things, it's known as the site of the only public fossil field in the United States, where anyone can pay a $3 fee and collect up to three fossils.
While this photo is not highly detailed, being reproduced from a period snapshot, it's a great window into life in a small central Oregon town a hundred years ago. It prints best in smaller sizes up to 8 x 14.
