This photo of a woman who has seen much was published in 1923 as part of Edward S. Curtis' masterpiece, "The North American Indian".
Curtis was know for two types of Native American portraits - those which he staged showing traditional garb and activities, and those, often showing the elderly, which simply recorded the contemporary reality when the photo was taken.
This photo is of the latter type, capturing a woman in her machine-made sweater and headband, sitting in front of her reed-mat home somewhere in the Klamath Basin.
