We don't know the names of these two men, though a note written on the back of the original CDV states "My father". They do appear to be brothers.
We don't know the names of these two men, though a note written on the back of the original CDV states "My father". They do appear to be brothers. We know more about the photographer, John A. Winter, who pursued his craft in Oregon from at least 1864 through 1896.
For most of that time his studio was located in Eugene. In addition to his photography business, Winter also engaged in sheep ranching, and owned an 830 acre spread near Brownsville. He suffered on and off with physical ailments, especially in the 1870s, but always recovered to continue his photography.
