For decades, much of the traffic through Willamette Falls Locks was log rafts, moving downstream to Portland area sawmills, and often beyond. Here we see crews of men consolidating logs below the locks, and above the old suspension bridge. Broken down into smaller rafts to fit through the locks, they could now be recombined into larger groups to be towed downstream by tugboats.
