Sometimes called "Spearing for Salmon", this popular view shows the use of the gaff hook - a sharp hook at the end of a long pole, used to stab the fish and then lift it to shore.

This traditional type of fishing was used by Native Americans in combination with net fishing - both gaffs and nets attached to poles worked by men on platforms or on rocks along the river shore.
