A Portland Fire Department pumper from about 1917. An early "hybrid" in that it had an internal combustion engine for propulsion and a steam engine for pumping.
An early Portland Fire Department pumper from about 1917. It appears to be the same vehicle now on loan to the Oregon Fire Service Museum.
The museum identifies it on their website as a 1916 American LaFrance Type 31 Tractor with 1902 American Metropolitan Steam Fire Engine. It combined "traditional" steam pumping technology, earlier drawn by horses, with a newer internal combustion engine that drove the front wheels. (Note the exhaust pipe behind the front wheel.)
