In 1913, two steam-powered fireboats patrolled the Portland waterfront - the George Williams and the David Campbell. They served together until 1928, when they were replaced by three new gasoline powered craft.
In this view, they display their capabilities downstream from the Broadway Bridge (we are looking towards the east). The residential neighborhood in the background is now gone.
An unknown photographer captured this detailed image, made special by the textures of the dark smoke from the hard-working engines, and the mist and spray from all the hoses shooting at once.
