Goose was one of about fifty Native American scouts, most from the Arikara tribe, who served with the Seventh Cavalry at the time of the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Wounded in battle, he was transported down the Yellowstone River by by the steamer Far West, and eventually recovered.
In this portrait, taken some years later by well-known photographer D. F. Barry, he is holding what appears to be an arrow, but it's actually a nicely decoratived pipe tamper.
