The 14th Cavalry was formed in 1901 in Leavenworth, Kansas in 1901, and spent 1903 through 1906 in the Philippines, where it was involved in the insurgency campaigns. In 1906 the regiment returned to the Pacific Northwest, and was based at Fort Walla Walla, Washington, from 1906 through 1908. Wallowa Lake is about 150 miles southeast of Walla Walla.
