This rare early photograph was taken shortly after the locks were opened in 1873, and shows steamboats in the upper river, lower river, and locks. In the boat basin in the foreground - the upper river - is the steamer Success. Below it in the lower river is the sternwheeler E. N. Cooke, and passing through the locks is the Governor Grover.
The Success was built in Canemah in 1868 to serve the upper river, before the locks were built.
