Oxen and steam donkeys were the primary ways to bring logs out of the woods during this era, but mule teams and horses were sometimes used, especially for smaller logs.
Oxen and steam donkeys were the primary ways to bring logs out of the woods during this era, but mule teams and horses were sometimes used, especially for smaller logs.
Skid roads made of logs placed across the path made the job practical, and one of the responsibilities of the crew was to "grease the skids" to make the logs slide more easily.
In detail view 1 we can see one of the loggers with a large metal can of grease, and the long brush he used to apply it.
