This Depression-era photo of an Independence, Oregon street corner shows a gathering of local hop farmers discussing politics and other pressing issues of the day. Two of the participants seem intent on cleaning splinters and dirt from their hands and fingernails using knives - see detail views one and two.
A sign in the drugstore window advertises some potion as "The best for hop poison", a malady well-known to hop pickers. Hops are sharp, and though harvested in warm weather, most folks wear long sleeves and gloves to minimize scratches and the rashes that follow.
I wonder what the fellow on the curb in the black hat is discussing. It sure seems to have caught his attention.
