This crisp photo shows the docks, a sternwheeler, paper mills on the west side of the river, and the results of an early mishap caused by venturing too close to Willamette Falls. As reported in the Eugene Register-Guard of January 7, 1892, the ship was caught by the current, carried to the rocks, and would have sunk there except for quick action by the crew of the Bentley, who managed to tow the Salem to the brick mill dock, where she did sink in ten feet of water.
Estimates were that three thousand dollars would be required for repairs.
