The sidewheeler "Alaska" waits at the Northern Pacific Railroad docks in Tacoma, Washington.
The sidewheeler "Alaska" waits at the Northern Pacific Railroad docks in Tacoma, Washington. The Alaska only ran from 1884 through 1889, and along with its sister ship, the Olympian, was known as one of Henry Villard's "white elephants", due to their inability to operate well in northwest waters.
Tacoma was the western terminus of the Northern Pacific lines, and the location of its west end repair facility.
