The first Oregon City municipal elevator, opened in 1915, was originally powered by water pressure.
The first Oregon City municipal elevator, opened in 1915, was originally powered by water pressure. This photo was taken shortly after its construction, before it had been painted white. It is the only outside municipal elevator in the U.S., and one of only four in the world.
When water-powered, the trip to the top took three minutes. It was said that you could tell when the elevator was in use because water pressure would drop in other buildings. The elevator was converted to electric drive in 1924, which reduced the transit time to 30 seconds.
