This classic view looks upstream below the locks and above them, Willamette Falls. The steamer is the Elmore, built in 1895 and abandoned in 1917. The log rafts are likely on their way downstream to mills, having passed through the locks.
Detail view 2 helps date the photo, as Station A and other mill buildings had not been repainted yet by Hawley, who refurbished them before the 1909 opening of his pulp and paper mill. Recreated from a hand-tinted magic lantern slide.
