This view of Depression-era homes near the Ross Island Bridge was created by Arthur Rothstein, just out of college and working as one of a dozen photographers for the Farm Security Administration.
He took a series of photos of Portland's "Hooverville", a name often given to these communities. Many of the men who lived here in the winter worked in orchards in the Willamette Valley and Washington during the summer.
Detail view 1 shows the Ross Island Bridge, built in 1926, clearly visible in the background. Detail view 2 shows a close-up of perhaps the largest house in the photo.
