Southern Pacific engine number 10, a wood-burning Baldwin locomotive, stops in Oregon City as part of its payroll run through towns along the Southern Pacific line in Oregon. Its one passenger car was divided into a kitchen area where the men dressed in white prepared meals for the rest of the crew, and a secure cage at the far end where cash was stored and pay disbursed.
Employees were usually paid by check, but many elected to endorse their checks and receive the wages in cash - ready for immediate spending.
